How to change your life

Time for a change?

Have you ever thought you’d like to change your life, or indeed said ‘I’d like to change my life but I don’t know where to start’?  So how do you start to change your life?

What do I want to change?

One of the first steps in ‘how to change your life’ is to decide what it is that you want to change. It might sound a bit obvious when you put it like this but although many of us are uneasy about an aspect(s) of our lives, or have some sense that there is more to life than this, very few take the time to stop and work through these thoughts.

Like us you may feel there is more to life than the routine of 9-5 and paying the bills. So, if you want to begin the process of life change it is helpful to get a clear idea of:

  1. What you want to change. This is about assessing your life as it presently stands and identifying areas you want to change to give you the life you want. This can typically be around areas of money, relationships, health, work-life balance or specific issues like weight or fitness.  Having identified what you want to change, the next step is deciding what you do want.
  2. Goals. This involves deciding what you want, identifying your goals, ambitions and aspirations and then being as specific as you can about how you will know the goal has been achieved.  For example, I want to be thinner (goal) and I’m going to weigh 150lbs (specifics of goal).

Tom Daley's Goals become a reality Tom Daley was clear about his goals and ambitions.  Here’s the picture he drew as a 9 year old, alongside a picture of him on the diving board in the London 2012 Olympics.  At 18 Tom achieved his vision winning the Olympic bronze medal for Great Britain in the diving. This site is one of our goals. It aims to empower you to achieve the life of your dreams, to help you make it brilliant rather than ‘One day less to be living!’ Lol. Helping you helps us too.  We’re doing something that makes a difference to other people’s lives whilst achieving our own work-life balance goal and having fun along the way.

So what can you do now?

  1. Decide what area you want to change in your life.
  2. Decide what you want to change it to (goals)
  3. Write down your goals.  Written goals help you frame the nature of what you want and are more likely to be achieved.
  4. Read Kathryn Bryant’s book Changeability: Manage your Mind – Change your Life and learn 10 techniques to take your life to the next level.
